A Bit About Our Government

Boy howdy, is our government all messed up! I watched this C-SPAN the other day, have you seen this? They show the Congressional sessions and all that, I guess. Which is where the Senators and so on get up and talk, and then I guess they vote on the laws.

First of all, do you know that both the House Minority Leader and the Senate Minority Leader are white?! I mean, what is up with that? I mean, one of them could at least be Hispanic or at the very least half-Asian or something. But nope. White as a sheet, the both of them. Crazy!

Secondly, does everyone realize that Maryland is a state?! Seriously? But there it is, plain as day, they get Senators and Representatives just like they were an actual state. I mean, I’ve driven up I-95 before, and I think it took all of 5 minutes to drive through Maryland. And they get the same level of representation as real states like Oklahoma and the Bahamas.

Finally, do you realize that the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management is chaired by Eleanor Holmes Norton? That’s right: the Representative from DC!

I mean, District of Columbia reps can’t even vote on the final passage of legislation on the House floor, but here she is, chairing the subcommittee that holds the pursestrings on most of the Recovery Act projects!

And hmm, how about the General Services Authority’s first experience with National Broker Contracts (wherein multiple Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity contracts were awarded utilizing no appropriated funds, and under which task orders may be issued and contractors will be compensated via the private sector practice of commission payments)?

How’s that going?! Just ask Eleanor, I guess! Even though she does not formally represent anyone in any meaningful legislative way!

Well, anyway, I’ve never been a political junkie, and I don’t know a lot of the details of what’s going on up there in DC, but I don’t worry about it too much.

Because at least I know good ol’ President Reagan’s still at the helm.
